FAQs

Is Versaflex 225 (VF225) the same as K5?

Yes, Specialty Products, Inc originally manufactured K5, SPI is now owned by PPG. The formula is the same.

What is Versaflex 225?

VF225 is an ultra high-strength, high-elongation 100% pure polyurea, originally developed as a resilient blast resistant polymer. Soon after, it was discovered that VF225 is exceptionally resistant to abrasion, compared to other spray applied coatings. VF225 can be sprayed on to virtually any surface configuration, at any thickness. Therefore, it can be selectively applied to high wear areas.

Will VF225 make my boat indestructible?

No, VF225 offers many benefits and protection, but it can still be damaged. There are no boat hulls that are truly "indestructible."

What type of boats benefit from VF225 Hull Protection?

Production built, aluminum boat hulls are the best candidates. VF225 is a great way to protect hulls before and after a hull has had a major or minor repair.

What colors of VF225 are avaliable?

Black and Slate Gray are the only two colors offered.

How long does it take to put VF225 on my boat?

While the polyurea application doesn't take long, the entire process from preparation to curing is time consuming. No boat will be returned to a customer that is not fully cured. No boat will be completed in less than 14 days.

Can I have service work done on my boat, motor, or trailer while VF225 is being applied?

Yes, please let us know of your service requests before bringing your boat in.

Do I need to do anything special with my boat before bringing it in for VF225 application?

Yes, please remove all loose personnel items. The boat will be flipped upside down for the application process. Please remove all tackle, fishing rods, anchors, bait buckets, life jackets, loose seats, etc.

Do I need to have cracks and punctures repaired on my hull before VF225 is applied?

Yes, any openings in the hull should be welded shut before application. We can arrange welding if required. This will extend turn around time.

Can you fill in dents in my hull with VF225?

No, but PPG does offer an epoxy filler for collision repair prior to application. Collision repair and body work above and beyond normal preparation is billed at $135 per hour.

Can VF225 be repaired if damaged?

Yes. Every repair is a little different, but many repairs do not require flipping the hull upside down.

Will VF225 seal up leaking rivets?

Yes, it will stop rivets from leaking water into your hull. If this is your primary concern please let us know before bringing your boat in.

What is the warranty policy for VF225 Hull Protection?

Defects in workmanship are covered for one year from completion date. Impact damage is not covered under any type of warranty.

How thick is the coating applied on the finished product?

The coating will be around 200mils thick on the bottom. The coating will be thinner on the sides, this offers protection from side impacts, delamination, and allows for a uniformed finish. The coating will typically terminate on the side of the hull at a spray rail. If there is no rail or body line, we will tape a line roughly 12in up from the bottom.

Note: 1/4inis 250mils

How much weight does VF225 add to my hull?

This depends on how large the hull is. On an average G3 1860CCJ hull the coating adds approximately 109lbs.

Approximate weight of coating added:

14ft ~ 85-90lbs

16ft ~ 92-96lbs

18ft ~106-12lbs

20ft ~ 125-130lbs

What makes the finished product so slippery?

Wearlon Wetlander Slick Coating is applied to the bottom of each hull for an ultra slick surface to help glide over hard surface. It also makes launching and retrieving the boat a smooth process.

Can VF225 be applied to a fiberglass hull?

Yes, but the preparation and primer required are different. Please call for more detail.

Can you spray the interior of my boat with VF225?

Currently we do not offer any interior coatings.
